Contagion Movie Review

I just returned from an advanced screening of Contagion. A film about a global disease outbreak and a team of CDC doctors trying to find a cure. I thought it was a wonderful film, and it had a great cast. The cast included Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, and Jude Law as the main characters. They all gave great performances, but the standout performance belongs to Matt Damon his character ark was the most detailed and complete. I found that Jude Law’s character seemed comical and had a smugness that just didn’t fit with the rest of the movie. The film had a large cast and it spanned the entire globe so each character had a limited time to make their impact.

One of the best aspects of the movie was the musical score that accompanied the moments of the film when the virus was being transferred from person to person. This ominous music was accompanied by a still frame of a transfer moment. It really made me very self aware of all the things I had touched before and after the movie. I found myself glad that the doors of the theater were open so I wouldn’t have to touch them on the way out. I also caught myself touching my face while walking to my car and wondering what had it also touched with that hand; the door to the parking garage, the parking payment machine, the money I used to pay. Yikes!! Where’s my Purell? Overall I thought it was a great film that left me thinking, what did I just touch?

Director: Steven Soderbergh
